Role-Playing Tips

There is more to role-playing a Half-Orc than just saying "Me smash" and "Crush elfie!"  Indeed, Half-Orcs can, if you so choose, make your character far more deep and complex than any other race.  Here are a few tips to developing your character:

General Rules:

     Rule Number One:

There are no standards.  Role-players create their characters, and can choose their past and background, making nearly everything possible.

    Rule Number Two:

The past created does  not need to be reasonable, but it is very much suggested that your past at least be feasible.  Remember possible parents of Half-Orcs, and the possibility of being a Horc, a half-orc of purely Half-Orc blood traced back as far as the Orcs record (two or three generations).

    Rule Number Three:

Half-Orcs are commonly thought to be dimwitted.  This seems true of the Half-Orcs raised in Orc tribes or Orcish-Horc cultures, but it is merely a misunderstanding.  It is merely that Common may be second language to the Half-Orc, who has little time to gain expertise in it, which leads to broken speech, indicating a lack of mastery of the language.  This lack of mastery should be dropped when amoung Horcs and Orcs alike, and used only if wished in role-plays with non-Orcs.  Possibly, if you really wish to make role-playing realistic (albeit confusing), if the Half-Orcs in a play have not both  mastered Orc, indicating one was not raised in an Orc society, then there may be broken speech used by one or both Orcs.  Also, those who wish to play intelligent half-orcs that were raised in Human or Elven cultures (both very rare and usually unaccepting) or even in Half-Elf cultures (less so unaccepting, so slightly more common) may even know common or elven and lack mastery of orc, in which case their lack of mastery is switched.  Of course, it is always possible your character has mastered all or none of the languages, and should be role-played accordingly.

    Rule Number Four:

Your Half-Orc may not be a war-monger, as some stereo-types hold.  It is entirely possible he is a possible the character disdains, even hates the thought of war.  Or he may possess a "Dwarf" mentality- meaning he believes that the best thing to do is shut out the rest of the world and ignore their existence.

    Rule Number Five:

Not all Half-Orcs look the same.  Examine the pictures on this sight, and the options in-game to create a character, and then decide what you look like.  There are many different choices for appearance and equipment, the key is to be creative and not limit yourself.

    Rule Number Six:

The mere fact that the Half-Orc is half Orc typically makes him unacceptable to other societies.  This leads to a few side effects.  One, the Half-Orc may be resentful of Orcs, Elves, or Humans, depending on how that society treated him.  The orc in his blood may cause this resent to turn into a grudge, hate, or even a desire of genocide.  Role-play this intelligently, because if your character hates everyone, everyone will hate him. Also, the loss of racism is not an easy task to accomplish in a person's values, so if you start role-playing him as racist, you should maintain that. Two, the Half-Orc is usually forced into the horc society, being offered no other choice of friends or acceptance.  The result of this on your character's psyche will vary from other characters.  Most Half-Orcs tend to be cynical, rebellious, and rowdy, the later two of the three being enhanced by their Orc blood.  They may even feel resentment toward half-orcs, somehow blaming them for their own exile from the race they know.  If you wish to role-play a devout Half-Orc (while rare, it is possible) you may choose to make your character work hard for acceptance amoung the Human or Elven race, depending on their blood.  They may also be so resentful of the Orcs they are born of that they will turn a complete 360 degree turn and seek to be the holiest and most honorable people of the realms.

Just a few thoughts... Remember, what makes your character unique is you!  Use these tips to help build, not do the work for you.
